Rod Stewart Tribute by Bob Wyper

1964 to1968 - After his first known recording dueting with Long John Baldry in The Hoochie Coochie Men, Up Above My Head (b-side of 'You'll Be Mine') in June 1964, various recordings exist of some of Rod Stewart's earliest sessions and live takes. These are thought to include The Steampacket, Shotgun Express and some early solo sessions from June 1964- Work Song, Ain't That Loving You Baby, Moppers Blues, Don't You Tell Nobody, Keep Your Hands Off Her, Just Like I Treat You, Bright Lights Big City. 

These were not released until later in compilations between 1976 and 2003 (eg. Dynamic Entertainment's Bright Lights, Big City, Alchemy Entertainment's Before The Fame and The Sun/News Of The World 2 promotional discs The Hidden Collection... this same album is on Amazon, and is called 'The Day Will Come', featuring these 1964 tracks plus the title track which was Rod's second single release in late 1965 on Columbia Records...  'Work Song' was left out of the set and others like 'Little Miss Understood' added to make up a 15 track album). 

Helen Clowes at the Rod Stewart Chronicles(RSC) tells us that Rod's first solo release was  'Good Morning Little Schoolgirl/I'm Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town' in October 64 (recorded in Sep64) on DECCA Records, just a few months after 'Up Above My Head'.

It is not known whether recordings exist of Rod's time with Wizz Jones or Jimmy Powell and the Five Dimensions in the early 60's when he also briefly appeared with Ray Davies Quintet (Kinks) and The Soul Agents.  Certain other singles appear only on compilations (eg. 1978 Rod's Ole Ola appears on The Tartan Army Scottish World Cup Anthems -Cherry Red Records- along with his Purple Heather recording and a Bob Wyper song written for Andy Cameron in 1982 called Scotland For Me.)
